Tuning in to Kids® for Afghan Mothers
A free program for Afghan mothers to enhance their parenting skills and build their relationship with their child.
Tuning in to Kids® is an evidence-based program, developed by the University of Melbourne, that supports parents and carers to enhance their parenting skills, build their relationship with their child and learn about emotionally intelligent parenting.
Since 2019, we've been delivering a culturally-adapted 'Tuning in to Kids® for Afghan Mothers' program co-designed with and for the Afghan community in Melbourne's south-east.
Programs are delivered with funding support from Communities for Children and community partners.
We also deliver Tuning in to Kids® groups for parents, dads, Afghan dads, and multicultural parents.
Evaluating our impact
In 2024 we held a focus group with program participants and interviewed facilitators to explore the benefits of adapting our parenting programs.
What we learned
- Programs had a profound impact on both Afghan mothers and fathers, transforming family dynamics and fostering emotional wellbeing.
- Group learnings extended beyond those who attended as participants were able to share their newfound knowledge and provide support to community members.
- Introducing a Tuning in program for Afghan fathers helped them to form open communication and build better bonds with their children.
- Taking part in a group program with other parents from similar backgrounds helps to foster confidence, self-esteem and community.
